Blue moon
Just to add to the fun for this particular Moon, there’s a small (8 percent) partial eclipse of the Moon at the time of the full phase. Visible only in the eastern hemisphere and eastern Europe, it is for the most part an event that most of us wouldn’t pay much attention to. However, having a lunar eclipse on the last night of the year is rather rare, occurring every 20 years or so. A lunar eclipse on the last night of a year ending in “9”, though, is extremely rare. I could only find three instances in a 5000-year Canon of Lunar Eclipses!
