Market Commentary for January 16, 2008
At the closing bell, here is how the major indices ended the session: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) posted a loss of 34.95 points on the day to end the session at 12,466.16; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) posted a loss of 98.74 points to end the session at 9,073.43; the NASDAQ posted a loss of 23.00 points for a close at 2,394.59; the S&P 500 posted a loss of 7.75 points for a close at 1,373.20 and the RUSSELL 2000 moved higher by 2.48 points to close at 699.91. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the world’s investable market capitalization) posted a loss of 3.49 points to close at 243.95 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 posted a loss of 16.19 points to close at 5,576.25.
On the NYSE today, advancers came in at 1,679; decliners totaled 1,504; unchanged came in at 93; new highs came in at 28 and new lows came in at 312.

U.S. Real Average Weekly Earnings rose 0.1% in December; U.S. December CPI Food Prices remain unchanged; U.S. December CPI Energy Prices rose 0.9%; U.S. December CPI Core rose 0.242%; U.S. December CPI Unrounded rose 0.283%; U.S. December CPI Ex-Food & Energy rose 0.2% ;compared to consensus of an increase by 0.2% and U.S. December Consumer Prices rose 0.3% compared to consensus of an increase by 0.2%.
U.S. December Industrial Production remained unchanged compared to consensus of a drop by 0.2%; U.S. December Capacity Utilization fell 0.2-Pt at 81.4% compared to consensus of 81.2%; U.S. November Capacity Use Revised to 81.6% from 81.5% and U.S. November Industrial Production was left unrevised at an increase by 0.3%.
Nov Net Foreign Purchases Of Long-Term U.S. Securities $79.7 Billion; Net Foreign Capital Inflow to U.S. $149.9 Billion in November; Net Foreign Buys of U.S. Treasury Notes, Bonds came in at$23.5 Billion in November; Net Foreign Buys of U.S. Agency Debt came in at$26.6 Billion in November; Net Foreign Buys of U.S. Corp Bonds came in at$15.5 Billion in November and Net Foreign Buys of U.S. Equities came in at $4.6 Billion in November.
Department Of Energy released data today: U.S. Refineries ran at capacity of 87.1% compared to expectations of a drop by -0.7 Pt at 90.6%; U.S. Distillate Stockpiles rose 1.1 Million Barrels in the week compared to expectations of an increase by 1 Million Barrels; U.S. Gasoline Stockpiles rose 2.2 Million Barrels in the week compared to expectations of 2.4 Million Barrels; U.S. Crude Oil Stockpiles rose 4.3 Million Barrels in the week compared to expectations of a drop by 300,000Barrels and U.S. Crude Oil Stockpiles rose 4.3 Million Barrels at 287.1 Million Barrels.
Fed Beige Book details released today: Economic Activity Modest, but Slower; Holiday Spending 'Subdued,' Outlook 'Cautious'; Demand for Nonfinancial Services 'Robust'; Housing 'Quite Weak,' to remain so in early 2008; Business, Consumer Loan activity slowed; Labor Markets 'Relatively Tight,' Labor Costs moderate and Firms face higher Food, Energy, Metal Costs.
Commodities Markets
The trend was lower across the board today for the Energy Sector: Light crude moved lower today by $1.00 to close at $90.84 a barrel; Heating Oil moved lower today by $0.03 to close at $2.50 a gallon; Natural Gas moved lower today by $0.08 to close at $8.06 per million BTU and Unleaded Gas moved lower today by $0.05 to close at $2.28 a gallon.
Metals Market ended the session lower across the board today: Gold moved sharply lower today by $19.40 to close at $882.00 a Troy ounce; Silver moved lower today by $0.41 to close at $15.89 per Troy ounce; Platinum moved sharply lower today by $20.50 to close at $1,567.50 per Troy ounce and Copper moved lower by $0.07 today to close at $3.17 per pound.
On the Livestock and Meat Markets, the trend was lower across the board today: Lean Hogs ended the day lower by $1.15 to close at $61.10; Pork Bellies ended the day lower by $1.15 at $83.48; Live Cattle ended the day lower by $0.95 at $93.40 and Feeder Cattle ended the day lower by $0.10 at $100.98.
Other Commodities: Corn ended the day lower today by $6.50 at $502.50 and Soybeans moved sharply lower today by $24.50 to end the session at $1,277.00.
Bonds were lower across the board today: 2 year bond moved lower by 2/32 to close at 101 12/32; 5 year bond moved lower by 7/32 to close at 102 26/32 today; 10 year bond moved lower by 16/32 to close at 104 6/32 and the 30 year bond moved lower by 1 8/32 to close at 110 26/32 on the day.
The e-mini Dow ended the session today at 12,490 with a loss of 74 points on the trading session. The total Dow Exchange Volume for the day came in at 209,130 which are comprised of Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange. The end of day results for the CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) which is comprised of the total Exchange Volume for Futures and Options (EVFO) including Electronic, Open Auction and Cash Exchange ended the day at 4,922,150; Open Interest for Futures moved higher by 117,068 points to close at 10,172,950; the Open Interest for Options moved higher by 234,746 points to close at 8,157,479 and the Cleared Only closed lower by 45 points to close at 21,717 for a total Open Interest on the day of 18,352,146 for a total Change on the day with a gain of 351,769 points.
