Market Commentary for October 08, 2007
The markets were plagued today by a very quiet, slow motion, low trading volume session. Trading ranges were snug creating a dismal trading atmosphere for day traders. It was a battle between the Bulls and Bears today with the Bears holding the majority, at the closing bell. The almost listless trading activity was attributed to a combination of the Columbus Day holiday with the Bond Market closed enveloping many traders who opted to take the day off as well; day ahead of the FOMC Minutes to be released tomorrow plus, possibly the unusually warm weather taunted traders out doors to bask in the potential final days of sunshine.
At the closing bell, here is how the major indices ended the session: the DOW (Dow Jones Industrial Average) posted a loss of 91.70 points on the day to end the session at 14,043.73; the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) posted a loss of 61.50 points to end the session at 10,186.43; the NASDAQ posted a gain of 7.05 points for a close at 2,787.37; the S&P 500 moved higher with a loss of 5.01 points to end at 1,552.58 and the RUSSELL 2000 moved lower by 4.74 points to close at 840.14. The FTSE All-World Index ex-US (top Large/Mid Cap aggregate from over 2,700 stocks from the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (GEIS) which covers 90% of the world’s investable market capitalization) posted a loss of 1.14 points to close at 272.75 and the FTSE RAFI 1000 posted a loss of 25.13 points to close at 6,378.73.
